125 Families Fed: How Hope Near Me’s First Bronx Food Distribution Became a Movement

HopeNearMe x Bronx River Houses

May 1st. Bronx River Houses. 125 families fed.

And honestly? It almost didn't happen.

Our very first Hope Near Me Mobile Food Pantry distribution was supposed to be a day where we fed somewhere between 75 and 100 families.

Instead, it became the day we realized this wasn't just an idea anymore.

It was real.

We wouldn’t have been able to pull this off without Norma Saunders, President of the Bronx River Housing Community Center.

Norma didn't just help us.

She saw what we were building, believed in what we were trying to do, and mobilized her entire staff to help.

Suddenly, we had people packaging chicken, separating grains, organizing groceries, and helping us prepare everything so we could actually serve the community.

The staff at the Bronx River Housing Community Center helped make our first distribution possible.

And we will forever be grateful.

We Planned for 100. We Fed 125.

Our original goal was to feed 75 to 100 families.

We fed 125 families.

That's 125 families who walked away with fresh food and groceries to take home.

And for us, that number represents so much more than a successful distribution.

It represents what can happen when people come together.

This Is What Hope Near Me Is About

Hope Near Me is not your average food pantry.

We aren't interested in simply distributing whatever food is left over.

We believe families deserve fresh, nutritious food.

Fresh eggs, fruit, grains, meat, and other whole foods with real nutritional value.

Because food insecurity shouldn't mean that families have to sacrifice nutrition.

And where you live shouldn't determine the quality of food you have access to.

That belief is at the heart of everything we're building.

The Real Cost of Getting Started

I'll also be honest about something else.

Even with the generous donations we received from our supporters, we personally came out of pocket about $700 to make this first distribution happen.

Was it stressful?

Absolutely.

Was it over budget?

Yes.

Was it messy?

Definitely.

Would we do it again?

A hundred times over.

Because this was one of the most impactful things we've ever been a part of.

From a Dream to a Mission

There's a moment when an idea stops being a dream and starts becoming real.

For Hope Near Me, that moment was May 1st.

It wasn't perfect.

It was messy.

It was stressful.

It cost more than we planned.

But it was real.

And standing there at the end of the day knowing that 125 families had received fresh food made every bit of it worth it.

This is only the beginning.

What's Next for Hope Near Me?

Our next goal is bigger.

We want to have our own food distribution truck so we can come directly to wherever the community needs us.

Our vision is to eventually distribute fresh groceries every single week in neighborhoods throughout New York where families need them most.

One truck.

One neighborhood.

One family at a time.

That's the vision.

And that's why we need your help.

If you believe every family deserves access to fresh, nutritious food, consider supporting Hope Near Me.

Every donation matters. Every volunteer matters. Every share matters.

If you can't donate, share our mission with someone who can.

If you can volunteer, we would love to have you.

And if you know a neighborhood that needs us, tell us where we should go next.

Hope Near Me — ending food insecurity one neighborhood at a time.
